My Little Programmer

Last night at dinner, Amy happily announced,

I’m in zeroth grade.

I’m so happy that we got her started early on counting from zero instead of one. :) In a similar vein, a couple of weeks ago we visited her classroom for “Back to School Day” and one of the projects the kids had done was a drawing with an “I can” caption. I can run, I can swim, I can ride a bike.Amy’s said,

I can build a circuit.

Actually the spelling was a bit off (they’re not even trying to work on that yet), but you get the idea. She got a Snap Circuits set for her birthday – or was it Christmas? – and has had a lot of fun with it. I’m sure it won’t be long before her hardware abilities exceed my own.

P.S. Her drawing is really improving lately, too. I’ll have to remember to post some pictures of her art soon.

  1. Great stuff Jeff! When does she start blogging? LOL

  2. zomg awesome.

    I wish I had a Model SC-300 when I was in zeroth grade…

  3. Here’s how the 0-based counting began:

At the playground at her school, an older child asked Amy what grade she was in. She replied “I’m not in any grade.” The older child, clearly familiar with this type of response, immediately said “Oh, you’re in kindergarten.” I talked to Amy a bit about kindergarten is, indeed, a grade, just like first grade, second, etc. Then, Amy announced “I’m in zero grade!” I immediately commented (mostly to myself), “Daddy will be very proud that you understand zero-based indexing.” :-) Then, at dinner, I prompted Amy to tell her part of the story again for Jeff’s enjoyment.

The Model SC-300 is really fun. It’s less fussy than the similar radio shack product (with wires and spring coils) that my brother and I played with as kids.
