New Stuff

I’ve made a couple of very minor changes to the site. The first is the new logo you see at left, which as far as I can tell is a unit patch for HMAS Platypus in Australia. Apparently the original HMAS (Her Majesty’s Australian Ship) was a depot ship for Australia’s “J Class” submarines; while the submarines themselves left service in the late 1920s, Platypus herself continued to have a distinguished career through World War II and into the 50s. In 1969 a new submarine base in Sydney was named HMAS Platypus in honor of the earlier ship, and continued in operation as the base for the “Oberon Class” submarines until December 15, 2000. It’s not quite clear whether the patch is actually from the original ship or the oddly-named base, but I suspect it’s the latter.

The other change is of a more technical nature, although it will mostly benefit my less technical readers. If you were to use this link instead of this one to get to my front page, you’d get a version that omits some of the more hard-core technobabble. I’ve retroactively marked several of my recent articles with a “geek flag” to make sure that both links behave as they should, and will in future try to apply that flag to articles as appropriate, but the full list of articles will remain the default and in general there probably won’t be too much difference between the abridged and unabridged versions.
